Parents can send money to children abroad for their living costs as maintenance of a close relative under LRS.
What you need
- Your PAN and address proof.
- Proof of relationship — for example the child's passport or birth certificate showing the parent's name.
- The child's bank details abroad: name, account number or IBAN, SWIFT and local bank code.
Rules worth knowing
- The sender and the receiver cannot be the same person for a maintenance transfer.
- It counts towards your LRS limit of USD 2,50,000 a year.
- TCS applies only above ₹10 lakh of LRS in the year — 2% for education-related transfers from own funds, 20% for other purposes.
If your child is a student
Living costs for a student can also go as an education-related transfer with the admission letter, which has a lower TCS rate above ₹10 lakh. We help you choose the right purpose.
How fast
Usually one to two working days after the partner bank sends it.
